If you need to use a document abroad, such as for legal, business, or personal matters, obtaining a US state or federal government authentication is necessary to ensure that the document will be recognized and accepted by a foreign country.
What is An Apostille?
An Apostille is a type of authentication that can ONLY be applied to a document by your state government or by the US State Department, NOT by a notary. Apostilles are used to authenticate documents for international use. It verifies the legitimacy of a document and usually the authority of the notary or official who signed it, making it accepted in countries that are part of the Hague Apostille Convention.
What is a Great Seal Certification?
If a country is not part of the Hague Convention, any document destined for that country will receive a Great Seal from the Virginia Secretary of the Commonwealth instead of an Apostille certification.
First Light Notary offers International Document Courier Services for Virginia. We will drive to you, notarize your document if appropriate, and submit it to the appropriate authority for you.
Note that birth, death and marriage certificates along with FBI background checks cannot be notarized.
I-9 employment verification documents should not be notarized, however a notary should act as an "authorized representative" to verify an individual's identity through the use of a government issued photo ID. Read More
Note that the Virginia Secretary of the Commonwealth and the US Department of State do not accept remotely notarized documents for apostille or authentication, so First Light Notary will need to meet with you in person at a time that is convenient for you.
